Used with permission from the artist. I just love this picture. The image is powerful. Just look at their feet Gen. Mary is properly called therefore the bearer of salvation. A new Eve, and more than Eve, she held in her hands the life by which we receive life. While the comparison of Eve and Mary is interesting, it should not be pushed too far. Jesus is our Saviour—the giver of new life.

Both of us are feminist and ex-evangelical, but approach this painting in very different ways. I printed out three copies of it, and made one of them into a wooden icon and hung it over my writing desk. Eve and Mary, next to the San Damiano cross St. I wrote three drafts of this article. I love it because it tells me things about sin and grace that touch me in a particular way.

Or browse results titled :. I really felt like it needed to be written in response to Sister Grace's gorgeous drawing, but couldn't get it right on my own. I was so moved by the awakening of the thought that Eve needed consoling: that she knew a rescuer was coming, but didn't know who, or when.
It turns out there is a lot going on in that verse! The painting inspired a song newly composed and released by Rain for Roots, the group spearheaded by Sandra McCracken and friends. Mary Consoles Eve was a song we all wrote together. She waited so long, seeing the consequences of their disobedience, watching things disintegrate. What must have it been like to find out how God would do what he did? O Eve!
